Introduction
The Garden Pavilion by coolstock is a recreational space located adjacent to the owners’ family house, accessible directly from the south side. This pavilion enhances the garden’s usability, providing a covered area for various leisure activities.
Design and Layout
The pavilion includes a summer kitchen with dining facilities, an outdoor living area with seating and a fireplace, as well as sanitary facilities and storage for food, tools, and garden furniture. Designed primarily for summer use, the pavilion offers a roofed and shaded space that is visually and physically open to the surrounding garden.
Architectural Features
The design features two concrete cubes within the pavilion space, which visually enclose the “interior” from the access road to the north and the ramp to the underground garage in the eastern part of the property. In contrast, the southern and western sides of the pavilion open up to the garden. Adjustable screens provide additional shading against the low western sun.
Roof and Ventilation
The pavilion’s roof is gently sloped towards the garden, allowing for natural ventilation of the attic space. It is elevated above the concrete cubes to facilitate this airflow. The floor of the pavilion is divided into two levels, separating the living space from the kitchen and dining area.
Materials and Construction
The pavilion is constructed using three primary materials—concrete, steel, and wood—stacked logically atop one another. The base consists of a polished monolithic concrete slab placed on the ground, with two exposed concrete cubes placed on its surface. Light steel load-bearing elements support a beam ceiling made of glued wooden profiles. The entire roof is covered with extensive vegetation, mitigating overheating in the attic space.
Conclusion
The Garden Pavilion by coolstock exemplifies a harmonious blend of modern design with natural elements, providing a functional and aesthetic addition to the garden space. With its thoughtful design and use of durable materials, the pavilion enhances the usability of the garden, offering a versatile space for relaxation and outdoor activities throughout the summer months.
