Introduction
Located in the beach town of Hayama, southeast of Kamakura on the Miura Peninsula, this 55-year-old apartment was transformed into a bright and easy-to-maintain home. The owners sought a space that would be both visually appealing and practical, leveraging the apartment’s large windows and garden-facing views.
Design Concept and Material Choices
To achieve a unified and bright interior, we chose lauan wood as an accent material and opted for PVC flooring sheets throughout most of the apartment, excluding the bedroom and entrance. PVC flooring was selected for its durability and ease of cleaning, making it an ideal choice for this renovation. The original wallpaper had deteriorated due to Hayama’s humid climate, so we applied diatomaceous earth to all walls to control humidity and enhance durability.
Kitchen and Living Area Transformation
The original kitchen was enclosed in a small, separate room. By removing the partition walls, we merged the kitchen with the living room, creating an airy, open space that allows natural light to flow through the large windows and visually connect with the garden. The new kitchen features a stainless steel countertop paired with custom-made lauan plywood storage units.
Functional and Aesthetic Enhancements
A white tile counter, matching the owner’s stainless steel high chairs, serves as a versatile space for standing or sitting. The same tiles frame the kitchen, providing a cohesive look. In the dining area, we installed lauan storage cabinets for added functionality.
To encourage family interaction, we designed a custom-made, over five-meter-long desk along the living room wall. This desk offers ample space for the entire family to work or study together, fostering a communal environment.
Capturing the Essence of Hayama
The goal of this renovation was to create a home that reflects the tranquil and unhurried atmosphere of Hayama. By thoughtfully integrating functional and aesthetic elements, we crafted a space where the family can enjoy the slow-paced lifestyle of this charming beach town.
