Redefining Space: House without Walls by Chaoffice

Introduction

Situated in Jinan, China, the House without Walls, designed by Chaoffice, is a testament to innovative architectural design. Spanning 130 square meters, this residence blurs the lines between home and office, offering a creative environment for its inhabitants, a young couple who are both designers.

Escape from the Metropolis

Tired of the urban chaos of Beijing, the couple sought refuge in Jinan, a secondary city offering more space and a lower cost of living. With their work requiring frequent domestic and international travel, the couple envisioned their new home to serve as both a living space and a workspace.

The Grand Table

Central to the design concept is the installation of a grand table, catering to various home and work activities. Crafted from standard modularized materials, the table spans an impressive 1.8 x 4.8 meters, providing ample space for creativity to flourish.

The Reformation of Discipline

The existing building structure, comprised of short-limb reinforced concrete shear walls, allowed for the removal of non-structural interior walls. After demolition, the space transformed into a cavernous environment, akin to a mountainous landscape.

Occupying the Cave

Retaining traces of its past, the renovated space features enlarged bathrooms wrapped in shelves and cabinets, serving as subtle dividers between public and private areas. Semi-transparent curtains further delineate boundaries, blurring the distinction between rooms.

All About Saving Budget

With a modest budget of 200,000 RMB, the renovation prioritized cost-effective solutions. Birch plywood was utilized extensively for on-site carpentry, including furniture and cabinets. Exposed concrete ceilings and walls, along with aerated block partitions, contribute to the raw and authentic aesthetic of the space.

Conclusion

House without Walls exemplifies Chaoffice’s commitment to redefining spatial boundaries and embracing creative possibilities within constrained environments. By integrating innovative design elements and cost-effective solutions, the residence offers a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, embodying the essence of modern living and working spaces.
