LaCalor Studio, nestled between the vibrant neighborhoods of Opañel and Comillas in Madrid’s Carabanchel district, stands as a testament to artistic innovation and collaboration. Designed by the esteemed architects at KAL A and brought to life in 2023, this creative hub offers a refreshing blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Uniting Indoor and Outdoor Spaces
One of the studio’s primary features is its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor areas. Originally housed in a former carpentry workshop, LaCalor Studio faced the challenge of limited access to its expansive garden. To address this, the architects opted for a bold approach: demolishing part of the rear façade to create a spacious double door. This architectural intervention not only enhances the studio’s visual connectivity with the garden but also floods the interior with natural light, minimizing reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.
Innovative Structural Design
Central to LaCalor Studio’s transformation is the implementation of a new steel and wood structure, facilitating the addition of a second-floor space. This elevated platform provides an independent studio area, effectively maximizing the available workspace. In a strategic move to optimize floor space, the traditional linear staircase was replaced with a sleek spiral staircase, adding a touch of modernity to the studio’s design.
Enhancing Functionality
A key aspect of the renovation involved reimagining the studio’s functionality to meet the diverse needs of its occupants. Storage areas for frames, tools, and graphic materials were seamlessly integrated into the workshop’s intermediate zone, ensuring accessibility without compromising on space. Additionally, provisions were made for essential amenities such as toilets and a kitchen, fostering a conducive environment for creativity and collaboration.
Adaptable Artistic Infrastructure
Recognizing the evolving nature of artistic production, LaCalor Studio boasts state-of-the-art screen-printing machinery capable of handling large-format dimensions. The flexibility of the printing setup, coupled with mobile washing and drying facilities, ensures that artists have the freedom to explore their creative vision without constraints.
Aesthetic Harmony
In a final stroke of design finesse, all structural elements and carpentry within LaCalor Studio were meticulously painted in metallic hues. This thoughtful choice not only seamlessly integrates the architectural intervention with the existing machinery but also imbues the space with a sense of identity reflective of its occupants.
In essence, LaCalor Studio stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration in Madrid’s artistic landscape. By reimagining traditional spaces and embracing modern design principles, it offers a dynamic platform for artists to thrive and create.
